Shaelyn Muldoon begins VISTA Volunteer Service with the Mora Creative Council
Hello my name is Shaelyn Muldoon. I moved to Mora, New Mexico my freshman year of high school from Nashua, New Hampshire. I quickly fell in love with the simple lifestyle that Mora had to offer. I have grown to love small communities such as Mora because of its rich culture, tightly knit and friendly community members, the history, the music, the beautiful mountains and more. I attended Mora High School all four years and graduated in May of 2016 and since resided in the sister town, Las Vegas, New Mexico.
I earned my Associates degree in Liberal Arts from Luna Community College in 2020. I will be receiving my Bachelor of Social Work in May of 2022 from New Mexico Highlands University, Facundo Valdez School of Social Work. I intend on continuing my education and receiving my Master of Social Work degree, I expect to begin the graduate program Fall of 2022. I have professional experience working with various populations such as adolescents, the elderly, and the severe/chronically mentally ill. My dream is to be both a Clinical Social Worker and an Advocate in both micro and macro levels for vulnerable and oppressed populations. I would like to help low-income communities build on their strengths and resiliency and assist in building on the community’s resources.
I see the potential Mora has and I believe the Mora Creative Council, Mora Main Street, other non-profits, and the community members themselves can all be a driving force for positive Change. I have seen what amazing things the people in this community can do when they work together. I am thrilled to be an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer and to be able to help assist with the Youth Development Programs for the Mora Independent Schools. As a teenager, I struggled with many challenges, and now that I am older, I want to be the person I needed as a teenager and be part of helping provide resources for this community. I have a drive, passion, and love for helping others thrive and succeed. Mora is a driving influence of who I am today, and I would like to be able to give back to the town and community that has shaped me to be who I am today. The afterschool and summer programs will provide both a fun and educational basis for the Mora youth, and I look forward to helping fulfill its mission.
