Grandma Joan’s Chokecherry Syrup
Chokecherries are one of the fruits that grow prolifically in the Mora area. Grandma Joan learned to make Chokecherry jam from her mother-in-law, a tradition that goes back to the 1800’s in the Maestas family. There was no written recipe. What Grandma Joan makes now is based on years of getting the measurements just right to earn the families approval that it is just the same as they remembered. Grandma Joan has been making her jelly for approximately 30 years. Her children and grandchildren help her set up at local craft fairs and fiestas.
